Roland and his ka-tet are continuing southeast through the forests of Mid-World when they are approached by desperate townspeople from Calla Bryn Sturgis — a quiet farming community living under a terrible curse. Once every generation, a band of masked riders known as the Wolves thunder out of the dark land of Thunderclap to steal one child from every pair of twins in the Calla. The children are returned months later mentally and physically ruined, doomed to grow enormous and die young. With the Wolves due to raid again in less than a month, the townspeople beg Roland’s ka-tet for help — and in exchange, a mysterious priest named Father Callahan offers Roland something that may be the key to reaching the Dark Tower.
