Bilbo Baggins is a perfectly content hobbit — small, comfort-loving, and with absolutely no desire for adventure. That changes the morning the wizard Gandalf appears at his door with thirteen dwarves in tow, recruiting Bilbo as the unlikely “burglar” for a grand quest to reclaim a vast treasure stolen by the fearsome dragon Smaug. Swept far from the safety of his hobbit-hole, Bilbo journeys through a world of trolls, goblins, giant spiders, and elves — and in a dark underground cave, stumbles upon a mysterious ring during a riddling contest with a creature named Gollum. By the time Bilbo returns home, he is a changed hobbit entirely — and that ring will one day change the world.
